Vijay Hazare Trophy
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is an Indian domestic cricket event that consists of 38 teams. The first match on a national level of the Vijay Hazare Trophy was played in 2002 and now the 31st edition was played in 2023-24. Haryana is the current champion of the 2023-2024 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Introduction
The event has the name of renowned Indian cricketer Vijay Samuel Hazare, who led his country's national side during its heyday in the 1950s. The 18th edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in its present competitive format was held between September 24 and October 25, 2019, and it was known as the 2019-2020 edition. The BCCI hosts the annual domestic limited-overs cricket competition known as the Vijay Hazare Trophy, commonly known as the Ranji One-Day Trophy. It is officially known as the Mastercard Vijay Hazare Trophy due to sponsorship considerations. The competition, which is named Vijay Hazare in honor of the renowned Indian cricketer of the twentieth century, was established in the 2002–03 season. Tamil Nadu has won the trophy 5 times, making them the most successful team. The victorious Saurashtra cricket team won their second Vijay Hazare Trophy by beating Maharashtra in the 2022–23 season.
The COVID-19 epidemic in India forced the cancellation of the 2020–21 Ranji Trophy, however, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed in January 2021 that the competition would still go on as planned. The five group winners as well as the best-performing runner-up advance directly to the quarterfinal round, while the other four runners-up compete in the preliminary quarterfinals after facing every team in the group once. The remaining 6 teams are joined in the quarter-final phase by the two pre-quarter-final winners. The zonal teams were substituted by four groups of seven people each from 2015–16 through the 2017–18 seasons.
The clubs were split into 3 Elite groups & 1 plate group for the 2018–19 season. The third elite group comprises 10 teams, compared to 9 for the second-place elite group. Nine new teams make up the plate group. According to the average points over the previous three seasons, teams are grouped.

The competition, which bears the name Vijay Hazare in honor of the illustrious Indian cricketer of the twentieth century, was established in the 2002–03 season on a national level. Until then, since the original introduction edition, which took place during 1993-94 season, the competition was played on a zonal level. Tamil Nadu has won the trophy 5 times, making them the most successful team. The best teams in each zone competed in a final round-robin stage during the 2002–03 & 2003–04 seasons. A playoff structure featuring semi-finals as well as a final has been used since the 2004–05 event, though the forms have changed.
The winning team of the first season was Tamil Nadu and Punjab was runner-up. The winning team of the 2003-04 season was Mumbai. There were two winning teams in the 2004-05 season. The next season was won by Railways in 2005-05. The Vijay Hazare Trophy was played each year after 2002 and the winners of the next seasons from 2006-24 were Mumbai, Saurashtra, Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Mumbai, Karnataka, Mumbai, Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, and Haryana. These are the winners of 22 seasons of the Vijay Hazare Trophy since it became a national event.
Just the overall most reliable team will have a chance to be included in Vijay Hazare's coveted winner's list. Mumbai has won the Vijay Hazare Trophy Championship four times, while Karnataka is next behind with three victories. Tamil Nadu has won the trophy a record five times. Now that Saurashtra has won the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the first time in the illustrious history of such a significant domestic competition, their name has been added to the list.
This league has created many good players throughout these years and one of them is Jagadeesan. In the history-making Vijay Hazare Trophy, Jagadeesan became the first player to achieve five List A hundred in a row. As he scored 277 against Arunachal Pradesh, he also shattered Ali Brown's illustrious record of 268 for the highest score by a male player in domestic 50-over matches. After five years with the franchise, during which he appeared in just seven games, the wicketkeeper was let go by Chennai Super Kings earlier this year. He responded with a bang, scoring runs of 114*, 107, 168, and 128, and scored a double century.
History & Structure
India's national cricket team has performed better as a result of domestic cricket competitions. Domestic competitions have given new players a chance to fit in with the team's culture and show the selectors what they can accomplish, which has boosted their performance and the team's success. These competitions have also given the squad the chance to grow more accustomed to the various playing surfaces, environmental circumstances, and other elements that might influence an effective international campaign. Vijay Hazare Trophy plays an important role in a domestic cricket league.
Since the Vijay Hazare Trophy's founding in the 2002–2003 season, it has been played in 16 seasons and featured 27 teams divided into five regional groups: East Zone, South Zone, Central Zone, North Zone, and West Zone. Each group had five to six teams, and each squad competed against every other team in the group once per league system. The five group leaders and three extra runners-up moved on to the round-robin quarterfinal round, where they would compete until the deciding game.
The competition's format altered during the previous 2017–2018 season, and the BCCI decided that it currently includes 38 teams divided into three elite groups and one plate group. Based on the points average over the previous three seasons, the first comprises 9 to 10 teams, while the second contains the remaining nine teams. Each group's champion and runner-up move on to a round-robin tournament to decide the winner. With the addition of extra games to the tournament, betting on this cricket tournament became more entertaining for sports fans and much more packed in terms of the quantity and quality of games.
Despite claims to the contrary, the competition was played for nine straight seasons before the present competition method was introduced, in a different, less complicated mode. With 27 clubs, the five zonal groupings solely competed in their internal leagues, without selecting a single overall winner.
Final Thoughts
When Indian cricketers choose to participate in the domestic league, they get access to a wide range of advantages. This has made it possible for the club to choose the top players from all around the nation and to make sure they are well-prepared for a variety of situations. The domestic framework also offers a way for senior players to rejoin the squad and for new players to advance to the international level.
The performance of the India National Cricket Team is significantly influenced by domestic cricket. It offers a venue for athletes to polish their abilities and get priceless experience while also enabling a quick selection procedure. Players are allowed to earn playing wages and acquire recognition in the cricketing community by participating in the domestic system.
