Tangiwai Shield

The Tangiwai Shield is a Test cricket trophy created to commemorate a defining moment in the history of New Zealand and South African cricket. The shield was unveiled in February 2024 ahead of the first Test of the New Zealand-South Africa series in Tauranga. It commemorates the Tangiwai rail disaster of December 24, 1953, when a lahar from Mount Ruapehu caused the Whangaehu River to destroy a railway bridge, sending a passenger train into the river and killing 151 people.

The tragedy had a profound impact on people across New Zealand, and it was particularly significant for the cricket community because Bob Blair, a fast bowler for New Zealand, was playing against South Africa in the second Test at Ellis Park in Johannesburg when the disaster occurred. Blair learned that his fiancée, Nerissa Love, was among those who died and initially remained at the team hotel to grieve. He later returned to the field during New Zealand's innings, joining Bert Sutcliffe at the crease after New Zealand had lost its ninth wicket. The courage shown by Blair, along with the support offered by the South African players, officials and crowd, became one of the most memorable stories in the cricketing history of the two nations.

More than seven decades later, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) formalized that historic connection by introducing the Tangiwai Shield for men's Test series between the two countries. The trophy was created to remember the victims of the disaster and the remarkable sporting courage associated with the 1953 Test. Designed by Ngāti Hine carver David Ngawati, the shield is made from New Zealand native puriri timber and features an inlaid mere made from pounamu sourced from the Tangiwai region, giving the trophy a strong connection to both the country and the story it represents.

Test cricket is the only format played for the Tangiwai Shield. The trophy was introduced specifically for Test series between New Zealand and South Africa, linking the modern rivalry with the historic 1953 encounter. The inaugural Tangiwai Shield series was played over two Tests in February 2024, with the matches forming part of the ICC World Test Championship. Future series will be determined through the international cricket schedule agreed by the relevant cricket boards and the ICC's Future Tours Programme.

The team that wins the most Test matches in a Tangiwai Shield series takes the trophy. New Zealand won the inaugural series 2-0 in February 2024, securing the first Tangiwai Shield after victories in Tauranga and Hamilton. The series therefore established the first chapter of a new trophy tradition between the two Test-playing nations.

The matches contested for the Tangiwai Shield can also form part of the ICC World Test Championship when they are scheduled within the relevant WTC cycle. This means the results can contribute to the teams' WTC standings alongside the significance of the series itself. The combination of a historic trophy and the demands of the World Test Championship gives these New Zealand-South Africa Tests added importance for both teams.

The Tangiwai Shield is more than a trophy presented at the end of a Test series. Its purpose is to preserve the memory of a tragic event and the extraordinary connection it created between New Zealand and South African cricket.
