Current Season

The Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament came to a close on January 25, 2025, marking the eleventh iteration of this prestigious sport. The tournament began on January 14, 2024, and lasted until January 25, 2025. A total of nine teams participated in the competition, which was held at the Fapla International Cricket Ground in Dhangadhi. These teams included representatives from seven of Nepal's provinces as well as two teams selected from each department. Further amplification of the competitive scene was brought about by the participation of the Tribhuwan Army Club, which was making its debut.

For the 2024-2025 season, the format was intended to give a significant number of chances for teams to compete against one another and for individual players to showcase their skills. A total of nine teams took part in the competition, and they were split into two groups: Group A, which consisted of five teams, and Group B, which included four teams. Following a league round that consisted of a round-robin format inside their respective groups, the top two clubs from each group were selected to go on to the "Super Four" stage. Another round-robin series was an important part of this Super Four round, which served to ratchet up the intensity of the competition as teams competed for a coveted berth in the championship match. For the championship title, the two teams who were considered to be the best in the Super Four competed against each other in the grand finale, which took place on January 25.

In addition to showcasing up-and-coming talent, the competition also included renowned talents. The Armed Police Force (APF) Club, which is a powerful force in Nepalese women's cricket, once again displayed its superiority by emerging as the winners for the seventh time. They did this by beating Sudurpashchim Province in a final that was fiercely fought. Individual performances were also remarkable, with Mamta Chaudhary of Sudurpashchim Province leading the scoring charts with 209 runs and Manisha Upadhyay of Bagmati Province leading the wicket-takers with 10 scalps. Both of these women made significant contributions to the team's overall achievement. Indu Barma, who plays for APF Club, was honored with the Player of the Tournament title, which was given in recognition of her comprehensive contribution to the accomplishments of her team. Throughout the competition, there were a total of 22 matches that were played, each of which included exciting moments and highlighted the growing quality of women's cricket in Nepal.

Previous Seasons

In Nepal, women's cricket has developed throughout the years, and the Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament has an extensive history that reflects this development. Since its debut in 2015, the event has experienced several changes, both in terms of its structure and the teams who have participated in it. These changes have all been made to elevate the level of competition and expand the scope of the sport.

Ten teams competed in the first-ever edition, which took place in 2015. These 10 teams included nine regional teams and one departmental team. The competition was conducted in a round-robin style, with the teams being split into two groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. With this preliminary preparation, the framework was prepared for a tournament at the national level, which would showcase the emerging talent from throughout the country. Following their victory against APF Club in the championship match, Region-VII (Janakpur) emerged as the first-ever champions.

In the aftermath of the first competition, the tournament underwent a transformation, whereby the regional teams were substituted with teams that represented the five development areas of Nepal. As a result of this modification, the number of teams that participated was lowered from six to six between the years 2016 and 2018, but the fundamental pattern of group stages followed by knockouts was preserved. During this period, the APF Club started to establish its supremacy by winning many championships, notably in the years 2016, 2017, and 2018. The reliability of their achievements served to highlight the expanding power and organizational structure of the organization.

Before the 2019 season, there was a major change that took place when the five regional teams were replaced by teams representing Nepal's seven provinces. This brought the total number of teams back up to eight which had been previously present. This provincial model has, for the most part, stayed in place, which has resulted in a distinct geographical representation and has fostered healthy competition between regions. In the 2019 season, the APF Club continued its winning record by claiming victory against Sudurpashchim Province.

Koshi Province won their first championship as a result of their victory against APF Club in the championship match of the 2020 season, which was remarkable for breaking the monopoly that APF Club had held. The growth of cricketing skills outside the departmental sides was shown by this triumph, which indicated that other provincial teams were becoming more competitive. APF Club, on the other hand, swiftly restored their domination by winning the championships in 2021 and 2023-2024. Another province that had a moment of glory was Sudurpashchim Province, which triumphed in the 2023 competition and demonstrated its rise as a formidable challenger.

Throughout several seasons, the event has served as a springboard for a significant number of players represented by Nepal's national team. Rubina Chhetry, who holds the record for the most career runs, and Karuna Bhandari, who is the highest wicket-taker in the history of the competition, have constantly shown their ability in the Prime Minister Cup, so establishing the significance of the tournament as a proving ground for national selection. The good trajectory of women's cricket in Nepal is highlighted by the fact that the tournament's structure has evolved over time and that there are an increasing number of teams that are ready to compete.

History and Structure

The Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament is more than just a tournament; it is a demonstration of the unshakable dedication of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to the development of women's cricket at all levels, from the most basic to the most advanced. The tale of its development is connected with the larger narrative of cricket's expansion in Nepal, a country in which the sport has won the affection of a large number of people despite the difficulties associated with its infrastructure.

It wasn't until the early 21st century that organized women's cricket in Nepal started to gain traction, but the history of men's cricket in Nepal dates back far further. In July 2007, the Nepalese women's cricket team participated in the ACC Women's Tournament, which was held in Malaysia. This was the team's first international competition. During this first venture into international competition, it became clear that there was a pressing need for a well-organized local system that could regularly find, train, and develop female cricket players. The early years of women's cricket were often characterized by individuals who participated enthusiastically but in an informal manner, and there were few opportunities for skill growth.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) took the initiative to organize a flagship domestic event for women after seeing the severe need that existed in the country. In 2015, the Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament was officially launched, marking a significant turning point in the process of formalizing and expanding women's cricket inside the nation.

Structural Evolution of the Tournament

Since it was first introduced, the Prime Minister Cup has been subjected to several structural adjustments, which are a reflection of the efforts made by CAN to improve its structure and guarantee that it has the greatest possible effect.

Early Formats (2015-2018)

The first-ever competition, which took place in 2015, had ten teams: nine regional teams and one departmental team, which was the APF Club. To attract talent from a variety of geographical areas around the nation, this format was developed to be inclusive. The teams were split into two groups, each of which played each other in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group were then moved on to the semi-finals, which culminated in the final. With this early structure, a fundamental basis for competitiveness was established.

Between the years 2016 and 2018, the competition had a minor adjustment to how its teams were represented. The number of teams that participated in the competition was reduced to six as a result of the replacement of the regional teams by teams that represented the five development areas of Nepal. Even though fewer teams were competing, the structure remained virtually the same, consisting of a group stage followed by knockout rounds. The APF Club emerged as a strong power during this period, which was one of the most important periods in the process of establishing the tournament's position in the domestic calendar.

The Provincial Era (2019 Onwards)

In 2019, the CAN adopted a province format, which aligned the competition with Nepal's administrative divisions. This was a substantial change that took place. It was decided to replace the five teams representing the development regions with teams from each of Nepal's seven provinces:

  • Koshi Province
  • Madhesh Province
  • Bagmati Province
  • Gandaki Province
  • Lumbini Province
  • Karnali Province
  • Sudurpashchim Province

In addition to these provincial teams, the departmental teams, which mostly consist of the APF Club and, more recently, the Tribhuwan Army Club, also take part in the game. This mixture of regional and institutional power makes the competition a unique and exciting experience. As a result of this modification, the number of teams that participated was expanded to eight (and will grow to nine in 2024-2025 with the introduction of Tribhuwan Army Club), which resulted in the development of more intense geographical competitions and an improved sense of community for supporters.
