Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The BGT, which began in 1996 as a single Test, has changed over time into a 2-match, 3-match, or 4-match series, which is now the standard. Australia has hosted the BGT seven times thus far, whereas India has hosted it eight times. India has a significant lead over Australia in the 16 matches played so far since they have won the series 9 times versus Australia's 5, with one series ending in a draw the year the trophy was also awarded to India as the holders. India has so won the BGT a total of 11 times.

India has won seven of the nine home series and lost only once, while the Indian squad has recently won two of the nine series and drew one in Australia. A minimum of four of the series have been whitewashed, despite the majority of meetings being quite tough. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has seen 55 tests played in all. Of the 55, Australia has won 20 Test matches, while India has won 24. Eleven of their clashes have ended in draws.

India and Australia played each other 50 times in 12 series before the BGT. Australia has won seven of the 12 series, India has won one, and four of the series have ended in draws. Every BGT season has had a player of the series, with India's national hero Sachin Tendulkar taking home the honor three times, while 12 other players have also been recognized.

Past Border-Gavaskar Trophy Editions

• 2024-2025 Series

  From November 2024 to January 2025, India toured Australia for a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, part of the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Australia won the series 3-2, regaining the trophy after more than a decade. The hosts claimed victories in Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney, while India triumphed in Adelaide’s Day-Night Test and the Boxing Day match at the MCG. The series marked the first five-Test contest between the sides since 1991-1992 and drew record crowds across all venues. With outstanding bowling displays and crucial partnerships, Australia sealed the series in Sydney to finish third in the WTC standings, while India ended narrowly behind. The competitive spirit, global viewership exceeding 180 million, and vibrant fan support made the 2024-2025 edition one of the most commercially successful and memorable in recent history.

• 2022-2023 Series

  India and Australia compete in a Test cricket series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Future tours of the International Cricket Council are used to play it. India had held onto the trophy as of February 2023 after defeating Australia in the first two Tests of the 2023 series. The series bears the names of two famous former captains: Allan Border of Australia and Sunil Gavaskar of India.

  Due to the T20 World Cup that took place in Australia in October 2022, the four-match series that was originally scheduled for October to November 2022 was postponed. The new date for the series was February 2023.

  At Nagpur, the first Test began on February 9th, 2023. Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, decided to bat first after winning the toss. Australians were knocked out for 177 in their opening innings. Indian spinner who was in recovery took a fiver and dominated this inning. The Indians, on the other hand, scored an enormous 400 runs, building a 223-run advantage. Australia's second innings, which they bowled out on only 91, was a complete disaster. The first Test was won by an inning and 132 runs and Ravindra Jadeja was named Man of the Match for his amazing comeback.

  The second one began in Delhi on February 13th, 2023. After winning the toss, Patt Cummins decided to bat first. Australia scored an astounding 263 in the first inning. India scored 262 in response, leaving them just 1 run behind. Despite having a slim lead going into the second innings, the Australians were bowled out for just 113 runs. India knocked down the goal of 114 with 6 wickets remaining thanks to a career-high 7/42 wicket total from Ravindra Jadeja. Man of the Match was given to Ravindra Jadeja for his superb bowling effort.

• 2020-2021 Series

  India owned the Border-Gavaskar Trophy going into the series after triumphing 2-1 both at home in 2017 and in Australia in 2018-2019. Australia last won a series at home, by a score of 2-0, in 2014-2015. On the last day, India completed the target chase with three extra overs. They won by three wickets and the series 2-1 with a final score of 7/329. Australia hadn't lost a Test match at The Gabba since 1988, and the most recent draw there was in 2012. With his match-winning knock of 89*, Rishabh Pant earned the title of Man of the Match, while Pat Cummins was awarded Man of the Series.

• 2018-2019 Series

  From November 2018 to January 2019, the India cricket team traveled to Australia to compete in four tests, three ODIs, and three T20 International games. As the fourth game of the series ended in a tie, India took the overall Test series 2-1. India became the very first Asian side to win a Test series in Australia.

• 2016-2017 Series

  In February and March 2017, the Australian team visited India and played four Test matches. India won the series 2-1. With the series win, India simultaneously owned the series victories over all other Test teams.

• 2014-2015 Series

  From 24 November 2014 to 10 January 2015, the Indian cricket team visited Australia. Two tour matches & four Test matches made up the tour. The first Test was supposed to take place in Brisbane on December 4 but was postponed due to Phillip Hughes' death. Instead, the first Test was held in Adelaide starting on December 9 while the second Test was held in Brisbane starting on December 17. Indian skipper MS Dhoni announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket following the third Test's draw. Australia won the series 2-0 when the final Test in Sydney ended in a draw.

• 2012-2013 Series

  From February 12 to March 26, 2013, the Australian cricket team played a four-match Test series against India while on tour in India. Mahendra Singh Dhoni broke Sachin Tendulkar's previous record for the best score by an Indian Test captain during the first Test, making 224 runs. [1] India won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by sweeping all four Test matches by a score of 4-0. After their defeat over South Africa in 1970, this was the first time Australia lost a test series by a score of 4-0.

• 2011-2012 Series

  From 15 December 2011 to 28 February 2012, the Indian cricket team visited Australia. Four Test matches for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, two Twenty20 matches, and eight one-day international matches were played during the visit as part of the Commonwealth Bank Tri-Series, which also featured Sri Lanka. Australian team swept the four-match Test series 4-0 to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Michael Clarke, the captain of Australia, was voted player of the series after scoring 626 runs at an average of 125.20.

• 2010-2011 Series

  The 2-Test series was won 2-0 by India. The Man of the Series award was given to Sachin Tendulkar. On October 1-5, 2010, the first Test was contested at PCA Stadium in Mohali, Punjab. By one wicket, India prevailed. The Man of the Match award went to Zaheer Khan. On October 9-13, the second Test was played in Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. India prevailed by 7 wickets. The Man of the Match award was given to Sachin Tendulkar.

  The most productive batsman was Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 403 runs in 4 innings at a rate of 134.33. With 12 wickets in two Test matches, Zaheer Khan held the top spot in wicket-taking.

• 2008-2009 Series

  The opening Test of the 2008-2009 campaign was held in Bangalore's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. This contest was a draw. The PCA Stadium in Mohali, Punjab, served as the site of the second Test match. On Day 5, the Indians delivered a masterful all-around effort to defeat Australia by a record 320 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the four-test series. At Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla, the third Test match was played. The game was a draw in the end.

• 2007-2008 Series

  Australia hosted the Indian cricket team from December 2007 until March 2008. Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, made his final trip to Australia before retiring. The trip includes a Four-Test series that took place in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide between 26 December 2007 and 28 January 2008. The series was won 2-1 by Australia.

• 2004-2005 Series

  From October 6 to November 5, 2004, the Australian cricket team traveled to India for a Four-Test series. Matches in the series were held in Bangalore, Chennai, Nagpur, and Mumbai. The series was won 2-1 by Australia.

• 2003-2004 Series

  From November 2003 to February 2004, the Indian cricket team visited Australia. The trip includes a Four-Test series that took place in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney between 4 December 2003 and 6 January 2004. When the Test series ended in a 1-1 tie, India kept the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

• 2000-2001 Series

  From February to April 2001, the Australian cricket team traveled to India for a Three-Test series as well as a five-match ODI series. As the third team to win a Test match after already being requested to follow on during the match in Kolkata, the series is regarded as one of India's best. India defeated Australia in the Test series, breaking their 16-match Test winning streak. One of the greatest contests in sports history, according to many, was the one in Kolkata.

• 1999-2000 Series

  Based on the strength of the 3-0 series victory against Pakistan at home, it was expected that Australia would win the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the first Test at Adelaide, Australia won by a score of 285 runs thanks to a century from skipper Steve Waugh in the first innings and India's disintegration in the second innings thanks to Damien Fleming's five-wicket haul. Despite Tendulkar's century in the first innings, Australia won the second Test in Melbourne by 180 runs. The Australian bowler Brett Lee, who would go on to win 72 Test caps for Australia, made his debut in this match as well.

  Australia once again won the last Test in Sydney, this time by innings & 141 runs. Australia reached 5-552 in their lone innings because of centuries from Justin Langer (223) & Ricky Ponting (141*). Despite an effort by Laxman, who hit 167 runs off 198 balls in the second innings, the damage had already been done when India was bowled out for 150. Glenn McGrath was the driving force behind the effort, taking 10 wickets overall.

• 1997-1998 Series

  In February and March 1998, the Australian cricket team traveled to India to record its first victory there since the 1969-1970 tour. Sachin Tendulkar scored 155 runs off 191 balls in the first Test in Chennai, giving India a 179-run victory over Australia. Mohammad Azharuddin put on another dominant display in the second Test in Kolkata, scoring 163 runs in India's single innings to lead his team to a one-inning victory and keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home. Sachin Tendulkar scored his second hundred of the series during the last Test in Bangalore. Australia won the series' consolation match, ending it 2-1 in India's favor.

• 1996-1997 Series

  The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was first played during the 1996-1997 one-off Test. Moreover, this was Sachin Tendulkar's debut series as captain. The one game of the series was held in Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. India defeated Australia by seven wickets in the slightly over four-day match that took place from October 10 to 14, 1996.
