The Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament is more than just a tournament; it is a demonstration of the unshakable dedication of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to the development of women's cricket at all levels, from the most basic to the most advanced. The tale of its development is connected with the larger narrative of cricket's expansion in Nepal, a country in which the sport has won the affection of a large number of people despite the difficulties associated with its infrastructure.

It wasn't until the early 21st century that organized women's cricket in Nepal started to gain traction, but the history of men's cricket in Nepal dates back far further. In July 2007, the Nepalese women's cricket team participated in the ACC Women's Tournament, which was held in Malaysia. This was the team's first international competition. During this first venture into international competition, it became clear that there was a pressing need for a well-organized local system that could regularly find, train, and develop female cricket players. The early years of women's cricket were often characterized by individuals who participated enthusiastically but in an informal manner, and there were few opportunities for skill growth.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) took the initiative to organize a flagship domestic event for women after seeing the severe need that existed in the country. In 2015, the Prime Minister Cup Women's National Cricket Tournament was officially launched, marking a significant turning point in the process of formalizing and expanding women's cricket inside the nation.

Structural Evolution of the Tournament

Since it was first introduced, the Prime Minister Cup has been subjected to several structural adjustments, which are a reflection of the efforts made by CAN to improve its structure and guarantee that it has the greatest possible effect.

Early Formats (2015-2018)

The first-ever competition, which took place in 2015, had ten teams: nine regional teams and one departmental team, which was the APF Club. To attract talent from a variety of geographical areas around the nation, this format was developed to be inclusive. The teams were split into two groups, each of which played each other in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group were then moved on to the semi-finals, which culminated in the final. With this early structure, a fundamental basis for competitiveness was established.

Between the years 2016 and 2018, the competition had a minor adjustment to how its teams were represented. The number of teams that participated in the competition was reduced to six as a result of the replacement of the regional teams by teams that represented the five development areas of Nepal. Even though fewer teams were competing, the structure remained virtually the same, consisting of a group stage followed by knockout rounds. The APF Club emerged as a strong power during this period, which was one of the most important periods in the process of establishing the tournament's position in the domestic calendar.

The Provincial Era (2019 Onwards)

In 2019, the CAN adopted a province format, which aligned the competition with Nepal's administrative divisions. This was a substantial change that took place. It was decided to replace the five teams representing the development regions with teams from each of Nepal's seven provinces:

• Madhesh Province
• Bagmati Province
• Gandaki Province
• Lumbini Province
• Karnali Province
• Sudurpashchim Province

In addition to these provincial teams, the departmental teams, which mostly consist of the APF Club and, more recently, the Tribhuwan Army Club, also take part in the game. This mixture of regional and institutional power makes the competition a unique and exciting experience. As a result of this modification, the number of teams that participated was expanded to eight (and will grow to nine in 2024-2025 with the introduction of Tribhuwan Army Club), which resulted in the development of more intense geographical competitions and an improved sense of community for supporters.
